Hand-Tied vs K-Tip vs Tape-In Hair Extensions: Which Is Right For Your Hair?
Share
Studio Eighteen Hair Lounge in Gilbert installs three kinds of hair extensions: hand-tied wefts, K-tips, and tape-ins. Each one is applied differently and needs different upkeep. Every new set starts with an extension consultation, where your stylist matches the method, color, and length to your hair.
How do hand-tied wefts work?
Hand-tied wefts are sewn onto a row of small beads placed along a thin section of your own hair. There's no glue and no heat on your hair. They lie flat and look natural, which is why many of our long-term extension guests stay with hand-tied.
- Upkeep: a move-up every six to eight weeks or so, as your hair grows.
- Rows: one or two rows, depending on your density and goal.
- Best for: natural-looking length or volume, especially on medium to thick hair.
Our full hand-tied extensions guide covers install day and move-ups.
How do K-tip extensions work?
K-tips are small strands with a keratin tip. Your stylist softens each tip with a heat tool and rolls it onto a small section of your hair, where it sets as a bond. Because they're placed strand by strand, K-tips can go exactly where you want them, including spots where a weft won't sit well.
- Upkeep: worn for a few months, then removed in the salon and replaced.
- Best for: guests who want extensions that move freely and hide well in ponytails.

How do tape-in extensions work?
Tape-ins are thin wefts with adhesive tabs that sandwich a small section of your hair near the root. They install quickly and lie flat.
- Upkeep: a move-up every six to eight weeks, with fresh tape.
- Options: a full set or a partial set.
- Best for: fine to medium hair, and guests trying extensions for the first time.
Which extension method is right for you?
- Most natural look with no glue or heat: hand-tied wefts.
- Most freedom in placement and updos: K-tips.
- Quickest install and easiest to try: tape-ins.
- Fine hair: tape-ins or a light hand-tied row.
- Thick hair: hand-tied wefts or K-tips.
Your stylist will confirm at your consultation, after checking how much weight your hair can support.

What does an extension consultation cover?
- Your stylist looks at your hair's density, length, and condition.
- You talk through your goal: more length, more volume, or both.
- Your stylist recommends a method and how many rows or pieces.
- Extension hair is color-matched to your hair.
- You get a plan for install day and upkeep.

- Brush gently from the ends up, holding near the root.
- Keep oils and heavy conditioner off the bonds, tapes, and rows.
- Dry your roots fully after every wash.
- Sleep with hair in a loose braid.
- Keep every move-up appointment.

Frequently asked questions
How much do hair extensions cost at Studio Eighteen?
Hand-tied, K-tip, and tape-in installs are priced at your extension consultation, based on your hair and how much extension hair you need. Move-up starting prices are on our service menu.
How long do hair extensions last?
It depends on the method and your care. Hand-tied and tape-in sets get moved up every six to eight weeks, and K-tips are usually worn for a few months before removal.
Will hair extensions damage my hair?
Not when they're placed correctly and kept up. Damage usually comes from too much weight, skipped move-ups, or removing extensions at home.
How long does an extension install take?
It depends on the method and how much hair you're adding. Tape-ins are usually quickest, and K-tips and hand-tied rows take longer. Your stylist will give you a time at the consultation.
Can I sleep, swim, and work out with extensions?
Yes, with some care. Braid loosely for bed, rinse after swimming, and dry your roots fully after workouts and washes.
How often do I need to come in for maintenance?
Most hand-tied and tape-in guests come in every six to eight weeks for a move-up. K-tips are removed and replaced after a few months.
Can I color my hair while wearing extensions?
Your roots can be colored, but your stylist works around the extensions. For a big color change, color first and then install extensions matched to the new shade.
How do I book a hair extension consultation?
Book an extension consultation online or call the salon. Bring photos of looks you like.
